‘End of the romantic story’: Florida couple days away from 59th anniversary died in bed together

Instead of planning a celebration for his parent’s 59th anniversary, Sergio Lozano is planning a funeral after they died together in the Florida condo collapse.

Sergio told CBS Miami he had dinner with his parents, Antonio and Gladys Lozano, hours before the Champlain Towers South condominium collapsed Thursday at 1:30 a.M.

“After dinner, I work early in the mornings and hugged my mom goodnight, kissed my dad, and that was it – no more,” he said.

Lozano lives two blocks away in the Champlain East Tower and was able to see his parents, who lived in apartment No. 903 in the South tower, from his home.

That changed on Thursday when he heard a noise and thought a tornado had hit the Surfside community.

“I opened the door and I told my wife, ‘The building is not there.’ She goes, ‘What do you mean?’ ‘The building, is gone.’ ‘What do you mean?’ ‘My parents’ apartment is not there!'” He told CBS Miami.

‘Time that it takes is just so painful’:Time. Weather. Conditions. The extremely difficult task of identifying Miami condo victims.

The Miami-Dade Police Department found Antonio, 83, and Gladys, 79, in the rubble one day apart from each other, the agency said.

The two met in Cuba and knew each other for over 60 years. Sergio said his parents used to joke about who would die first.

“My dad would say to my mom, ‘If you die, I don’t even know how to fry an egg, I’m gonna die.’ My mom would say, if my dad would die, ‘I don’t know how to pay the bills.’ I always told my mom, ‘Don’t worry, I will do it. But they died together. It’s not fair, being crushed, being destroyed, not fair,” He said to CBS Miami.

A friend of the couple, Eloina Trujillo, said she “will always remember them with their cute smiles.”.

His parents were due to celebrate their 59th anniversary on July 21 and Sergio is finding solace in knowing they died together.

“I was told they were in bed together. That’s the end of the romantic story,” he said.
